Do credit repair companies work?

All the credit repair companies say their services work and there are a lot of people on the internet who say they have used a credit repair company to raise their credit score, but there are also a lot of people who say that all credit repair companies are scams and that they don't work. What is the truth? I need help with my credit but I don't want to get screwed out of a bunch of money.
