What can a collection agency can do beyond reporting this to credit bureaus?
I got a parking ticket in SF by using a rental car, I disputed the ticket due to the reason that I think the machine was not working, but they came back with the machine was working and I have to pay for the parking, at the time I was out of country when they sent me the letter, when I came back, I paid the $53 parking fee, but it was late, they also charge me $30 late fee, I explained to them that the lateness was due to that I was out of country and I also provided airline ticket to prove it, but they would not listen, and forward this late fee to the collection agency, now it is added up to $90. At this point, they do not have my personal information as this is the rental car, but can they get my information from the car rental place? the bottom line is that I do not want to pay for the late fee, beyond of max of 50 points damage to my credit, is there anything else they can do. My credit is over 800, 50 points damage is not a big deal to me.Answers...
A collections agency does have the ability to sue on behalf of creditors and if they win, they may be able to garnish your wages. In this case, however, it is highly unlikely that they would do so as the legal fees would far exceed the return.
Of course, this is assuming they are able to obtain your information. Otherwise, not only can they not report the debt to the credit bureaus, but they cannot even prove that you owe a debt in the first place.

Depends on your local state laws. Some can garnish wages or file a civil suit.
